CORN

Corn is the anchor commodity on our farm that we plant first in the spring. Our farm has won first place in the state multiple times with the NCGA Corn Yield Contest, because of our focus on fertilizing and irrigating the crop according to its needs. At harvest, we utilize a corn drying system to get the grain moisture at the exact levels requested by our buyers. Corn can be used in animal feed as a high energy source, while it is also used in the production of ethanol.

SOYBEANS

Soybeans are a crucial part of our crop mix as legumes, because they replenish the nitrogen in our soil. Philip Good also represents Mississippi soybeans as an United Soybean Board Director, working to promote soybeans internationally. Soybeans are processed into two products that have hundreds of uses. The soybean meal is primarily used in animal feed as a high protein feed source. The soybean oil is used in human consumption in products like soy milk, soy flour, tofu, and many other retail food products, while it is also used in non-food products like bio-diesel and bio-based plastics.

COTTON

Cotton is typically one of the last crops for us to plant in the spring, because it prefers the warm, southern climate. We work throughout the year to manage the plant growth and minimize the pests to have a lush, green plant during the summer and a field of white during the fall. Cotton lint can be used in everything from clothing, mattresses, coffee filters, and even money. Cotton seed is used in animal feed, while the oil from the seed is used in food, cosmetics, rubber, and bio-based plastics.

WHEAT

Wheat is broadcast onto our fields in late fall and harvested in late spring. After harvest, we can “double crop” soybeans into the same fields to maximize our production. Wheat is very sustainable on our nutrient rich soils to reduce erosion, increase water retention and organic matter, and encourage water infiltration. Our crop could be used in everything from animal feed to food products, including flour in bread, muffins, noodles, cakes, cereal, and many more.

catfish

At the beginning of the season, we receive small catfish called “fingerlings,” because they are the size of your index finger (4-6” long). Many of the ingredients used in their feed are products grown on farms like ours. After about 18 months, they will reach around 2 pounds and are ready to be harvested with a seines (large weighted nets). The catfish will be quickly processed in less than 30 minutes for the freshest, farm-raised quality.

Beef

Our herd is made up of registered Charolais and mixed commercial Angus cattle. We focus on feeding the highest quality feed with custom feed rations (even using our own corn) to generate healthy, happy cows. During the fall season, we will have dozens of baby calves that will eventually either be retained in our herd, sold to other ranchers, or processed into farm-raised beef.
